Answer: The photo shows a VAV Terminal Unit installation. The inlet duct is installed in such a way that it will cause highly turbulent air flow which will affect the ability of the unit to correctly monitor and control the discharge airflow. If the duct was installed as per the approved shop drawings, the inlet duct would satisfy the manufacturer’s installation requirements, however, the contractor did not adhere to the shop drawings. Additionally the contractor installed a manual damper upstream of the VAV, which would never be used because the VAV is an automatic damper.
